Scrolling through Instagram, I came across this post by Ruth Chou Simmons:
“Every worry is, at the core, a display of my impatience with God. At the root of all my fears, what-ifs, and worry, is an unwillingness to wait in prayer, wait on God’s timing, wait for His provisions.”
Her words spoke to my mama-heart. So often I worry about our girls, impatient for God to act. I turn the worst-case-scenarios over and over in my head. I struggle to wait, to remain steadfast and confident that His is the just-right timing. (Romans 5:6)
But oh! The waiting is often painful, so eager am I to see the Divine Gardner prune the dead branches and bring forth spiritual fruit in the lives of our young-adult children.
I am eager for the battle to be won, for sin to be conquered in their lives. I know that God is the One who will do the fighting. He will fight for us, for our children – we have only to be still, to remain calm, and to hold our peace. (Exodus 14:14)
And yet in that stillness God invites us to act.
He calls us to put on His own armor, to join Him in the work He is doing in the lives of our children. (Isaiah 59:14-18, Ephesians 6:10-20)
So if you are waiting to see God move in the lives of your young-adult children, stand firm and hold tight to this:
God tells us that though we planted the seed and our faith communities did the watering, the growing rejection of worldliness and the deepening of faith in the hearts of our children is the work of God alone. (1 Corinthians 3:1-7) It is by grace alone that they are saved so that we cannot boast in our methods of mothering, but rather boast only in the work of the Lord in their lives. (Ephesians 2:1-9, 1 Corinthians 1:31) Praise be to God.
So what do we do in the waiting?
We suit up in His armor and pray.
We pray, as we hold fast to Him who is a sure foundation.
We pray for our tender mama-hearts.
We pray for our children.
And we keep on praying for our children. We Never Give Up Praying for Our Young-Adult Children as we wait on the LORD to do His work in their hearts and in ours.
Friend, may you and I continue to fall to our knees, battling alongside the LORD for the hearts and minds of our children. May we remember that He alone is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1b)
For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies.
Deuteronomy 20:4
